Tijeras, NM, May 22, 2018 – The North Peak Fire was detected last night at around 9:00pm. It is estimated to be less than ¼ of an acre but continues to smolder in the forest area. The fire is located on the north portion of the Sandia Mountain Range between the Piedra Lisa and Osha loop trail and appears to be started by lightning.
Due to helicopter activity FR 455 Loop Rd will be temporarily closed to enable the Type 3 helicopter to load water buckets for suppressing the fire. A helicopter reconnaissance flight is scheduled for this afternoon monitoring the fire and surrounding area of the Sandia Mountains.
Yesterday’s rain did cover the district but not enough to sufficiently lower fire potential. We do expect drying warmer trend for the next week and are asking our communities to not become complacent.
