Dry, Hot Conditions Forecasted for the Morris Creek Fire

Summary: The Morris Creek fire, burning on the UU Bar Ranch, Philmont Scout Ranch, and State Land is expected to continue to dry out until predicted monsoonal moisture arrives at the end of this week.
Yesterday the fire behavior increased due to high temperatures and low humidity. A spot fire was detected outside containment lines near the southwest perimeter and helicopters dropped 10 water buckets to help extinguish the spot.
Today the fire will continue to actively burn along the northern perimeter and the change in fuel conditions adds to the complexity of suppression efforts. The fire is burning approximately 50 feet from the bottom of Rayado Creek Drainage. Strategies are in place in the event fire crosses the drainage, including aerial ignitions to decrease the chances of high intensity fire making a run up the south face of Rayado Creek. Firefighters are completing structure protection for values at risk that are located further north of the Rayado Creek Drainage.
Weather forecasts continue to include chances for showers and thunderstorms for some parts of New Mexico this week. There is concern for road conditions to change due to debris rolling onto the road from rains near the fire burn scar areas. Team #3 Incident Commander, Dave Gesser stated: “Our firefighting operations and tactics will continue to adjust due to the current drying trend and more active fire behavior along the northern perimeter. Although adjustments are being made, our number one objective will always be to provide safety for our firefighters and the public.”
