New Fire Start Location: Upper Bear Canyon within the Sandia Wilderness on the Cibola National Forest.
Start Date: June 7, 2023 Approx. Start Time: 1730 Size: 0.2 acres
Cause: Possible lightning strike.
Vegetation: Ponderosa Pine and mixed conifer.
Resources: Globe Hotshots, Payette NF Engine Crew and Sandia Ranger District Personnel
Strategy: Full suppression.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of the westside of the Sandias and Albuquerque.
Additional updates will be sent as new information is received.
Forest Service fire crews, including the Globe Hotshots, a severity engine from the Payette National Forest and Sandia Ranger District personnel are on scene of the Bear Canyon fire, which was detected yesterday evening burning in a rugged area within the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. The fire is estimated at 0.2 acres and is exhibiting minimal fire behavior. It is burning in brush and Ponderosa Pine. Crews will be assisted by a helicopter which will deliver water blivets (water storage container) for firefighting efforts.
The fire is currently posing low spread potential. Crews will continue to work this fire until it is deemed contained and controlled. This will be the final update for this fire unless there is a significant change in the fire situation.
