Chance Fire – Lincoln County – 6/23/2023

Date/Time: The Chance fire is active on private land west of Ruidoso in Lincoln County. This human-caused fire was reported this afternoon around 12:20 and had 240 homes within a 1-mile radius of the fire start. The fire has burned 10.3 acres. Effective suppression efforts from the Forestry Division, Lincoln County Volunteer Fire Department, Ruidoso Fire Department, USFS and the use of aircraft has halted forward progression.  Ground crews have hoses around much of the perimeter to cool down the fire’s edges.  

Resources: Sixty-two personnel are engaged in response. This includes 12 engines, 2 hand crews, 2 helicopters, 4 air tankers, and 5 water tenders.  

Weather: The current temperature is 85 degrees and relative humidity has increased from 12% to 17%. Wind speeds are 3-7 with gusts to 15 mph from the south to southwest.  

Evacuations: Evacuations have occurred in the immediate area including Spring Canyon Road and Chance Loop.
