Final Update on Chavez Fire – Sandia Ranger District

Cause: Lightning Strike        

Size: at 2:00 p.m. estimated to be at .10 acres.

Location: Near the Faulty Trail, west of Cienega Recreation Area off Crest Highway, Hwy 536 on the Sandia Ranger District.

Resources on scene: Forest Service.

Fire behavior: Low intensity.

Fuels: Timber and surface fuels.

Containment: 75%. 

Strategy: Full suppression.

Ground crews will continue to mop up, extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines down to the mineral soil and felling fire damaged trees.

Weather: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of rain between midnight and 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. https://www.weather.gov/

Values at risk: At this time, the fire is not a threat to any communities, and or values at risk. There are no evacuations in effect.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. Members of the public should stay away from Chavez Fire operations. 

Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting and can cause air operations to cease.
The public is reminded that “If you fly, we can’t!”

Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of Tijeras, Edgewood, Moriarty and Albuquerque / within a 50-mile radius of the Chavez Fire. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
