Fire Resources Respond to Two Lightning Strike Fires on Magdalena Ranger District

Water Canyon & Timber Peak Fires – July 10

Water Canyon Fire:
Start Date / Time: July 10, 2023 / 1443
Cause: Lightning Strike        
Size: 15 acres from air resource estimates.
Location: Water Canyon on the Magdalena Ranger District
Resources on scene: Firefighters from the USFS responding with rappelers, smoke jumpers and air attack due to steep rocky terrain.
Containment: 0% at this time.
Strategy: The strategy full suppression.
Values at risk: At this time, the Water Canyon Fire is not a threat to any values at risk or communities, and there are no evacuations in effect.

Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of Hwy 60 in Magdalena, Socorro and San Antonio, NM within a 50 mile radius of the Water Canyon Fire. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Timber Peak Fire:
Reported Start Date / Time: July 10, 2023 / 1537
Cause: Lightning Strike of brush, pine and grass.        
Size: .04 acres.
Location: Timber Peak area southwest of Water Canyon Road on the Magdalena Ranger District.
Resources on scene: Firefighters from the USFS are on scene.
Containment: 100% contained at 1745 with crews mopping up.

Weather: Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 67. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Tuesday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. Members of the public should stay away from fire operations. 

Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting and can cause air operations to cease.
