ALBUQUERQUE, NM, July 30, 2023 – Crews are responding to two wildfires on the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands that were sparked by lightning.
Mountainair Ranger District: Capilla Peak Fire
Start Date / Time: July 29, 2023 / 1710 Cause: Lightning Size: 1 acres Containment: 0%
Location: East of Capilla Peak in the Manzano Mts. within the 2008 Trigo Fire burn scar area on the Mountainair Ranger District.
Resources Responding: USFS Engine 642 and Larimer Module & Engine from Fort Collins, CO.
Strategy: The strategy full suppression.
Values at risk: Communication sites on Capilla Peak and Capilla Peak lookout tower. There are no evacuations in effect.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of east Manzano Mts.
Mt. Taylor Ranger District: Reid Fire
Start Date / Time: July 29, 2023 / 1806 Cause: Lightning Size: .01 acres. Containment: 0%
Location: North of Hwy 53 in southeast Zuni Mountains on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District.
Resources on scene: Due hazardous weather last night to include lightning and moisture crews disengaged. Firefighters reengaged this morning from the USFS Engine 623.
Strategy: The strategy full suppression.
Values at risk: Fire is not a threat to any values at risk or communities, and there are no evacuations in effect.
Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of Hwy 53 north of the El Malpais National Monument.
Weather for Central NM: Today: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 96. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south in the morning.
