New Fire Start in Taos Canyon

Carson National Forest fire crews responded to a wildfire in Taos Canyon this evening. Here are the latest details:

  • Size: 3 acres (estimate) with no containment
  • Strategy: Full Suppression
  • Location: Near the Mondragon Trail (#660), upslope from the Loma Verde Presbyterian Camp (Google Map)
  • Cause: Lightning (likely from a thunderstorm on Aug. 16)
  • Reported: Sun., Aug. 20 around 5 p.m.
  • Activity: Fire behavior is minimal with no growth expected overnight.
  • Staffing: Carson National Forest fire crews were assisted by Rio Fernando Volunteer Fire Dept. today and will be again Monday, along with Taos Pueblo and Angel Fire Fire Dept. One helicopter has been ordered (a helicopter from Farmington, NM, was ordered today but could not take off due to winds).
