New Fire Start on the Mountainair Ranger District – Box Canyon Fire

Cause: Undetermined.

Size: .4 acres

Location: Northeast of Upper Red Canyon Campground on the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest and Grasslands and southwest of Community of Manzano and north FSR 253 within New Mexico

Resources: USFS and Torrance County Fire Dept., are on scene.

Strategy: Full suppression.

Values at risk: Red Canyon Campground. There are no evacuations in effect.

Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of east Manzano Mts. & Estancia Valley.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. Members of the public should stay away from fire operations. 

Drones pose a serious risk to firefighting and can cause air operations to cease.
