Final update for Box Canyon Wildfire on the Mountainair Ranger District

Reported start date / time: September 6, 2023 / 2:30 p.m.

Cause: Under investigation.      Size: .5 acres

Location: Northeast of Upper Red Canyon Campground on the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest and Grasslands and southwest of Community of Manzano and north FSR 253 within New Mexico

Resources: USFS Engine 641 & 652 and Torrance County Fire Dept. tender are on scene.

Fuels: Timber and surface fuels.

Containment: 100%

Strategy: Full suppression. Crews continue to mop up and secure the fire perimeter to mitigate any identified threats to control lines.

Values at risk: At this time, the fire is not a threat to any communities, and or values at risk. There are no evacuations in effect.

Residual smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas of east Manzano Mts. & Estancia Valley.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. Members of the public should stay away from Box Canyon fire operations. 

This will be the final update unless conditions or the situation warrants additional information.
