[Update: The fire was contained on Sep. 26, 2023]
Fire crews this afternoon were on scene in Taos Canyon of Carson National Forest (map) suppressing a small wildfire. Caused by lightning on a previous day, smoke from the Casita Fire was first reported around 12:30 p.m. It is a tenth-acre and smoldering in a mixed conifer stand. Crews will continue containing the fire on Tuesday.
Every fire receives a strategic, risk-based response that is appropriate for the circumstances and the associated threats and opportunities. Fire plays a crucial role in mixed conifer stands, and while fire danger is currently at low, this was not an opportunity fire managers could take advantage of for its ecological benefits.
For now, fire personnel look forward to implementing prescribed fire projects this fall as part of the national Wildfire Crisis Strategy, which includes the Enchanted Circle Landscape where today’s fire is located. As opportunities with weather and conditions are identified, the Carson National Forest will announce potential dates.
