Santa Fe National Forest to implement the Rincon prescribed fire

SANTA FE, N.M., Oct. 19, 2023—The Santa Fe National Forest is planning to begin the Rincon prescribed fire beginning Friday, Oct 20 and continuing through Sunday, Oct. 22, pending favorable conditions and daily line officer approval. The Rincon Prescribed Fire is a 2,227-acre unit on the Coyote Ranger District located on French Mesa off Forest Road 8.

Fire management personnel have completed preparation work on the containment lines.

Contingency resources will be on-site and able to respond if needed until the burn is declared secure by the burn boss. Over the long term, crews will remain on the project to patrol for changes in fire behavior and to check for smoldering vegetation near containment lines. During the patrol phase, weather will continue to be monitored for any critical weather events that may require more resources.

Firefighters will first create a “blackline” along a portion of containment lines prior to ignition of the interior portion of the burn. Crews will utilize a helicopter for aerial ignition of the interior of the unit. Engines will be available for patrolling and contingency work.

Smoke will be visible on portions of Highway 96, 84 and 285 in the vicinity of Coyote, Abiquiu, and Ojo Caliente. Visit https://www.airnow.gov for air quality information.

The Rincon prescribed fire unit, which was delayed 3 weeks ago due to low humidity, is now within burn parameters with predicted precipitation to follow early next week.

Prescribed fire updates will be posted on the New Mexico Fire Information website and on the Santa Fe National Forest’s Facebook page and Website.
