SANTA FE, N.M., Oct. 26, 2023—Crews continue to secure around the Rincon perimeter by eliminating heat sources within 60 feet of the fire’s edge. On Tuesday, Oct. 25 a helicopter flew over the area, and fire managers found all containment lines are secure.
Six fire engines are on-site through Friday while additional fire crews will remain through the weekend as part of the long-term patrol plan. On Wednesday, Oct. 25, crews checked the interior to monitor smoldering vegetation. Increased cloud cover and relative humidity (rh) has slowed fire activity. Smoke will remain visible in the area temporarily as vegetation within the interior continues to smolder. The Rincon prescribed fire involved 2,227 acres of hazardous fuels located on French Mesa off Forest Road 8 on the Coyote Ranger District.
An Incident Commander (IC) will oversee the fire until declared out. A fire is declared out when there is no visible smoke or heat detected. As part of our new strategies for implementing prescribed fire, infrared detection devices (such as handheld devices or drones) will be used to monitor residual heat invisible to the naked eye on the fire.
Prescribed fire updates are posted to the New Mexico Fire Information website and on the Santa Fe National Forest’s Facebook page and Website. For more information on the Rincon prescribed fire, contact the Coyote Ranger District at 575-638-5526.
