Coyote Ranger District Gobernador prescribed pile burn: Monday and Tuesday fire personnel completed ignitions on 27 acres of piles on the southern end of the district. Currently, there is no smoke visible from the area. The unit was secured as of Tuesday and will continue to be patrolled and monitored until it is declared out. Fire personnel are planning ignitions on another 50 acres of piles at the northern end of the district along Forest Roads 8 and 11 on Thursday, Dec 14 and Friday, December 15. Smoke may be visible from Highway 96, and Highway 84, within the Rio Chama Canyon and the community of Abiquiu as smoke settles into low lying areas in the evening hours on Thursday and Friday night.
Cuba Ranger District American Park prescribed pile burn: This pile burn is along State Highway 126, and Forest Roads 69, 70, 93, and 103. The ignitions are completed in the Clear Creek Campground and the Rio de Las Vacas campground. These piles will reduce hazard fuels in the campground.
The pile burns are monitored and patrolled daily. The pile burns will be declared out when heat sources are no longer identified through IR detection Methods. The Santa Fe National Forest will use technology such as thermal cameras to look for possible heat sources during the monitoring period. Furthermore, a UAS (drone) IR flight will be conducted prior to calling the burn “out”. A prescribed fire is called out when no vegetation is burning within the area.
