Fire Resources Respond to New Fire Starts on the Mt. Taylor Ranger Districts

ALBUQUERQUE, NM, August 21, 2024 – Fire crews have responded to two remote area fires on the Mt Taylor Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands.

Mt. Taylor Ranger District: Monaghan Fire
Reported Date / Time: August 20, 2024 / 1630
Cause: Lightning         Size: .4 acres              Containment: 100%
Location: Monaghan Canyon off FSR50 in Zuni Mountains of the Mt. Taylor Ranger District on the Cibola National Forest.
Resources: USFS.
Strategy: Full Suppression.
Smoke may be visible south of I-40 in the surrounding areas of Thoreau, NM.
No additional updates on the Monaghan Fire will be sent unless conditions or the situation warrants additional information.

Mt. Taylor Ranger District: Cerro Fire
Reported Date / Time: August 21, 2024 / 1254
Cause: Unknown         Size: Estimated 2 acres                                    Containment: 0%
Location: Southeast Zuni Mountains in the area of Ojo Redondo of the Mt. Taylor Ranger District on the Cibola National Forest.  
Resources: USFS.
Strategy: Full Suppression.
Smoke may be visible south of I-40 in the surrounding areas of Milan and Grants, NM.
