Prescribed Fire Update: La Jara Unit Complete Apache Unit Next.

Here’s the latest on the prescribed fires on the Carson National Forest.

  • Fire crews conducted another day of ignitions on the La Jara and Apache Prescribed Fire, treating 600 acres around forest roads 5 and 706 in La Jara Canyon and near Highway 64. This completes ignitions on the entire 1,350-acre La Jara Unit.  Holding crews will begin a long-term patrol and monitor plan for the unit.  Tomorrow, other crew members begin ignitions on the 510-acre Apache Unit near Apache Canyon, to the south of Highway 64 and closer to the Village of Angel Fire. The public should expect to see smoke throughout the day.
  • A vehicle assigned to the Sotano Prescribed Fire caught fire before it was quickly suppressed this afternoon. A cause investigation is underway.
  • In case you missed it, managers are looking at the possibility of beginning the Powderhouse Prescribed Fire in Valle Vidal as early as Oct. 13. Read yesterday’s news release for more details.
  • Crews continue to patrol and monitor the Sotano and American Creek prescribed fires, which were completed yesterday and last week, respectively. This work includes the use of an uncrewed aerial system, or drone, outfitted with infrared to detect heat.
