Slash pile burning today near Silver City and Mimbres valley

Firefighters from the Silver City and Wilderness Ranger Districts plan to ignite slash piles today in the Little Walnut/Gomez Peak area, approximately 5 miles north of Silver City. Crews on the Wilderness Ranger District plan to ignite slash piles in the Terry Canyon area, approximately 13.6 miles north of Mimbres. It is recommended that hikers and visitors avoid areas of active burning or ignitions, and remember that ash piles may retain heat for some days following the prescribed fire. Crews will return to monitor residual heat on subsequent days until the prescribed burns are declared “out”.
