Laguna Fire Smoke Outlook July 5, 2025

Smoke is expected to increase significantly today and Sunday as firing operations pick up. Winds will push smoke east-southeast of the fire this afternoon where smoke impacts are mainly expected to occur in communities along the Rio Chama river corridor extending to Espanola late afternoon/early evening. Smoke levels could reach to levels of UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS in Canones, Abiquiu, and Espanola late this afternoon and into the evening. Smoke is expected to settle in the Rio Chama river valley overnight, where the highest concentration will be in areas closest to the fire where UNHEALTHY conditions could occur along the Rio Chama river above Abiquiu dam. Smoke will clear at the surface tomorrow morning as sun heats up the ground.

On Sunday, a similar pattern is expected, but with lighter and more variable winds. As a result smoke won’t travel as far and hazy conditions are expected as there will be less winds to carry the smoke out of the area. Monday the winds pick up which will start to clear some of the haziness.
