Gila National Forest drops fire restrictions

Fire Danger remains Very High

Silver City, NM, July 7, 2025—As a result of recent precipitation and cooler temperatures, Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes rescinded fire restrictions as of 8:00 a.m. today, July 7, 2025. The shift in weather conditions has combined to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires. Weather forecasters are calling for continued and more widespread precipitation over the coming weeks. This added moisture will continue the trend of improved fire danger conditions across the forest.

Although wildfire risk is reduced, the fire danger rating for the forest remains “Very High”. Visitors are encouraged to be careful with cigarettes and avoid building campfires if weather conditions are dry, hot, or windy, as well as to avoid parking hot vehicles over tall vegetation, and prevent chains dragging behind vehicles.

Remember that it is illegal to leave a campfire unattended. If you decide to have a campfire, be sure to fully extinguish it before leaving. Use plenty of water to drown the coals. Stir the water and coals together and use the back of your hand to feel the ash to be sure all heat sources have been extinguished.
