Southwest Team 1 begins the transition to a Type 4 team
Acres: 17,413
Personnel: 175 Containment: 75% Resources: 3 crew | 5 engines | 2 helicopters | 1 unmanned aircraft system | 1 water tenders | 3 ambulance
Highlights: The fire was tested over the last 2 days with higher temperatures, low humidities, and varying wind directions but due to all the hard work of firefighters on the ground, and in the air, the fire stayed within the planned containment lines. Tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. management of the Laguna Fire will transition from the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 1 to a Type 4 team on the Santa Fe National Forest.
Fire Activity: There was an increase in fire activity throughout the day yesterday due to the hot and dry weather. Smoke and some single tree torching was visible where interior pockets of unburned fuels were consumed on the eastern and northeastern sections of the fire. Firefighters continued patrolling, monitoring and enhancing containment on the northern and eastern portions of the fire line while helicopters assisted with water drops that kept hotspots within the fire’s perimeter. Gusty winds further tested the fire perimeter last night.
Today, aerial operations will continue to assist firefighters on the ground by utilizing the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to patrol the fire line, and helicopters to assist with water drops in areas retaining heat. Firefighters will continue work to enhance fire lines on the northern and the eastern sides of the fire. Additional firefighters are patrolling and monitoring the fire perimeter and finalizing the identified suppression repair needs.
The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has begun assessing the fire effected area. They will create and begin implementing measures to minimize the potential negative impacts from the burnt and unstable soil within the fire scar.
Weather and Smoke: The return of isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms are forecasted for today and throughout the upcoming week. Monsoon conditions will likely take hold again midweek. Smoke will continue to be present in and around the fire area. For the most up-to-date smoke information, visit fire.airnow.gov/.
Closures and Flight Restrictions: A closure order is in place for USFS lands in the area. To view the complete order, visit fs.usda.gov/r03/santafe/alerts/laguna-wildfire-closure-order. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is also in place for the area. For current TFR maps, visit tfr.faa.gov/tfr3/?page=list
