Highlights: Thanks to the continued hard work of firefighters the READY evacuation level at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert was lifted today. The fire was flown with an infrared (IR) camera last night and very little heat was detected within the perimeter of the fire. A reconnaissance flight is scheduled for today to help fire officials identify any remaining hotspots and develop a plan to address them. Work on containment lines in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness was completed yesterday.
The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has completed their soil burn severity map. The map is available to view at Inciweb-Laguna Wildfire or NM Fire Info.
Weather and Smoke: There is a slight chance of thunderstorms and showers over the fire today but primarily sunny with light winds. Starting tomorrow the forecast is sunny and dry with highs in the low to mid 90’s throughout next week. Light smoke continues to be present as small interior pockets of unburned fuels are consumed. For the most up to date smoke information, visit https://fire.airnow.gov/. If you are sensitive to smoke learn how to Protect Yourself from Smoke.
Safety: The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire and surrounding area remains in place. For the current TFR map, visit https://tfr.faa.gov/tfr3/?page=detail_5_6484. For the safety of our firefighters please avoid the area where crews are working. Drones and firefighting aircraft do not mix well and could lead to accidents or slow down wildfire operations. If you fly, we can’t.
Closures and Evacuations: Forest closure order 03-10-01-25-11 remains in place. To view the complete order and map visit, https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/santafe/alerts/laguna-wildfire-closure-order. The order is to protect the public’s health and safety during firefighting operations on the Laguna Wildfire. Gallina Ranch remains in READY evacuation status.
