Magdalena, N.M., Jan. 5 – The BLM’s Socorro Field Office plans to carry out slash burn operations in Magdalena, NM from Jan. 7 to 9. The slash pit is located off of FS 249 RD, 4 miles west of Magdalena and 0.5 miles north of HWY 60.
Active ignition will take one to five days, with some smoke visible in the burn area for up to a week after ignition operations are completed. Motorists should be aware that smoke from the fires could reduce visibility for brief periods of time on HWY 60. Extra caution is advised when driving in the area due to the potential presence of fire personnel and equipment along the road.
The BLM’s Magdalena slash pit is part of a cooperative effort with the local community to provide a place for disposal of woody debris from private lands, which reduces wildfire risk, improves ecosystem health, improves wildlife habitat, and help protect local communities from wildfire.
Please contact the BLM Socorro Field Office at 575-835-0412 with any questions about this project.
