Monday, March 24: Debris & Open Burning Safety (Part 1)

Debris and open burning are the top cause of human-caused fires in the Southwest.

Stay safe and protect your property while burning debris by following these six tips:

  • Contact your local fire authority.
  • Avoid burning on dry, windy days, when a fire can easily get out of control.
  • Clear a 10 foot space from around your burn pile. Keep your burn pile small.
  • Be prepared. Have a source of water and a shovel nearby.
  • Never leave your burn pile. Stay until it is completely out.

  • Monitors weather and fire restrictions
  • Brings the correct tools for extinguishing fires like plenty of extra water and a shovel
  • Knows how to safely build and extinguish a campfire
  • Has an alternative heating source like a well-maintained camp stove or generator

  • Dragging chains and worn vehicle parts can create sparks.
  • Inspect tires for damage and inflate to proper pressure. Bad tires can spark fires!
  • Check for loose lugnuts and ensure tires are properly mounted.
  • Never park on tall, dry grass – hot exhausts start fires!
  • Regular vehicle maintenance can prevent wildfires from malfunction or poor exhaust systems.
