BLM Prescribed Burns Planned Near Carlsbad

Carlsbad, NM – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning to conduct prescribed burns at three locations in the Carlsbad area beginning Feb 17 and continuing through the first 2 weeks of March, weather permitting.  These prescribed burn projects are part of a restoration effort to improve rangeland health and reduce hazardous fuels throughout the region.  The three locations are:

  • Hay Hollow Draw, located 25 miles south of Carlsbad, just south of Dillahunty Road (CR 424) and Gypsum Road (CR 425).  Smoke may be visible from Carlsbad, U.S. Highway 62/180, U.S. Highway 285, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Black River Village, Whites City, Malaga, and surrounding areas.  Approximately 12,200 acres will be treated.
  • 7 River Hills area, located 15 miles northwest of Carlsbad, just north and west of Brantley Lake.  Smoke from the burn may be visible from Carlsbad, Artesia highway (Hwy 285), Artesia, Atoka, Lakewood.  Approximately 6,480 acres will be treated.
  • Pinon/Dunken area, located 13 miles east of Pinon NM, just south of Hwy 24.  Smoke from the burn may be visible from Pinon, Dunken, and surrounding areas.  Approximately 1,625 acres will be treated.

The prescribed fire requirements include having the appropriate weather conditions and the required personnel and equipment on site.  Measures will be taken to reduce the amount of smoke created by the prescribed fire, and operations will be suspended early enough in the day to allow much of the smoke to dissipate before nightfall.  Signs to alert the public of the burn operations will be posted.  Public access into the project area is discouraged.
