Taos, NM, May 13, 2016 Ignition on the 2,6667-acre Tio Gordito prescribed burn was completed today. Both Aerial and hand ignition were utilized. Fuels will continue to burn in the interior.
Traffic on US Highways 64 and 284 was not significantly impacted, however a smoke inversion is expected tonight but should lift as air temperatures begin to warm in the morning. Smoke will be visible for several days.
Crews will continue to monitor the burn through the weekend.
The goal of this burn is to restore ponderosa pine by reducing densities, improving wildlife habitat diversity and revitalizing meadows and aspen groves.
