Dog Head Fire Daily 9:30pm Update

Containment Jumps to 61 Percent

DOG HEAD FIRE UPDATE – 6/21/2016, 9:00 P.M.

Acres: 17,912                                                                                     Containment: 61%

Cause: Human – under investigation                                                  Start Date:  June 14, 2016

Jurisdiction:  Cibola National Forest, NM State Forestry, Southern Pueblo Agency/BIA, BLM

Location:  6 miles NW of Tajique, NM

Vegetation:  Heavy fuels, dead and down timber, ponderosa pine stands

Damage Assessment: 24 single residences and 21 other minor structures

Total Personnel:  938

Additional fireline has been constructed on the northeast and east side of the fire increasing containment from 46 percent to 61 percent.  Helicopters dropped 2,100 gallons of water on the northeast side of the fire in the vicinity of where there are structures. Mop up continues on all areas of the fire to make sure burning embers are extinguished 100 feet in from the fire’s edge.

Only occasional flare-ups of vegetation in the interior of the fire were observed.  Firefighters noticed dust devils in the fire area which can often be confused with smoke.

Fire behavior tonight will most likely be smoldering. Firefighters will continue to patrol and mop up hot spots around the fire overnight, especially in the areas around the structures on the eastern flank.

As residents return to their homes it will not be uncommon for them to see flames or burning embers at night within the fire’s perimeter as unburned vegetation continues to burn.

Video recordings of tonight’s public meeting in Tijeras can be found on our incident Facebook page.

No additional public meetings are planned unless there is a significant change in fire conditions.

The strategy for this fire is full suppression. Incident objectives include providing for the safety of firefighters and the public, while protecting values at risk, and providing support for on-going utility recovery efforts, evacuations and planned re-entry into closed areas.
