Mountainair, NM; June 30, 2016 – The Comanche Fire was reported this afternoon on the west side of the Manzano Mountains. At last report, the fire size was approximately 1 to 1.5 acres. Air tankers have been dropping fire retardant and helicopters have been assisting with water drops for several hours with some success in keeping the fire small. The fire is burning in very rugged terrain within the Manzano Mountain Wilderness. Approximately 50 ground personnel including smoke-jumpers, hotshots and another hand crew will be hiking into the fire.
Tomorrow’s weather is calling for an increased chance of rain and higher humidity. Fire crews will look to take advantage of this forecast along with early morning shading to help in containment of the Comanche Fire.
This will be the last update for the night unless conditions or fire activity change.
