Carson National Forest Rock Tank Fire Update

The lightning caused Rock Tank fire reported July 20 on the Tres Piedras Ranger District is currently at 137 acres. The fire is located 2 miles south of US Highway 64 off of Forest Road 42, approximately 7 miles south and west of the community of Tres Piedras and is burning in grass and Ponderosa Pine.

The fire is 40% contained and continues to creep and smolder. Heavy fuels in the interior of the fire will produce smoke for the next couple of days. Today, crews will work to hold and complete the line around the perimeter of the fire and conduct mop up operations.

Today’s weather forecast is for slightly lower temperatures and a 40% chance of precipitation for this evening. No measurable precipitation was received yesterday.

Smoke will continue to be visible from Taos, Questa, Tres Piedras and surrounding communities. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
