Ignitions Postponed on Borrego Mesa Prescribed Burn on Española Ranger District

UPDATE: SANTA FE, NM – Sept. 22, 2016- Ignitions are postponed on the Borrego Mesa prescribed burn due to planning area receiving precipitation over night.

SANTA FE, NM – Sept. 21, 2016 For Immediate Release.  Fire managers on the Española Ranger District are planning to begin the Borrego Mesa prescribed burn tomorrow, Sept. 22.   Crews hope to take advantage of the forecasted favorable weather conditions and treat the 105-acre planning area, located two miles east of community of Cordova, with only one day of ignitions.

Prescribed fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems.  These fires mimic natural fires by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increasing habitat diversity.  Each prescribed burn is designed to meet specific objectives.  The Borrego Mesa prescribed burn is designed to remove dead forest fuels caused by disease and insects, provide community protection and promote forest health.  Prescribed fires are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Smoke from the prescribed burn will be monitored, and the information will be available to provide health advisories as necessary.  Smoke will likely be visible from Cordova, Truchas, Cundiyo, and Espanola.

Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website at https://nmtracking.org/fire.

For additional information about this prescribed burn, please contact the Española Ranger District at 505 753-7331.
