North Crest Fire – Bernalillo County – 7/6 2:00 p.m.

The North Crest Fire at the top of the Sandia Mountain range is estimated at 15 to 20 acres. The fire is burning in steep terrain on The Sandia Ranger District in the Cibola National Forest. There are communication towers to the South of the fire, but no structures are threatened at this time. Ground resources with the US Forest Service and the Bernalillo County Fire Department are currently monitoring this fire as helicopters make water drops from the air. Law enforcement has closed NM 536, the road leading to Sandia Crest, and evacuated the viewing area. The Sandia Crest Trail is also closed north of the Crest House. Smoke is visible from Albuquerque and surrounding areas. This fire was first reported around 7:00 a.m this morning (7/6). The cause has not been determined.
