Wildfire Named the “Visitor Center Fire” Burning SW of Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center

A 2 acre fire burning southwest of the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center at Pilar, NM, has been named the Visitor Center Fire.  The Visitor Center Fire is not within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument as initially reported but is on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Taos Field Office.  The fire received heavy rain this afternoon and firefighters will monitor the fire this evening.  Burning  in steep and remote terrain that is difficult to access, all actions will put firefighter safety first.  Crews are expected to be on the fire throughout the weekend.  Some smoke may continue to be visible as the fire burns in pinion and juniper.  Weather forecasts are calling for a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms tomorrow.  No structures are threatened.
