Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Districts going into Stage I Fire Restrictions starting April 18, 2018

Albuquerque, NM, April 10, 2018 – Hot and dry weather patterns continue after a long, dry winter.  The fire danger has increased to HIGH across both the Sandia and Mountainair Ranger Districts.  In response to current conditions, fire managers will enact Stage 1 fire restrictions beginning Wednesday, April 18, 2018, on both the Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Districts.  The following activities are prohibited:


  1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, except in Forest Service developed camp and picnic grounds where grills and stoves are provided by the Forest Service.
  1. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
  1. Possessing, discharging or using any kind of firework or other pyrotechnic device.


These orders will remain in effect until December 31, 2018, or until rescinded.  Violations of the fire order are punishable by a fine of $5,000 for individuals, $10,000 for organizations, and/or 6 months of imprisonment.  If you have any questions about the fire restrictions, please contact the Mountainair Ranger District at 505-847-2990, the Sandia Ranger District at 505-281-3304 or the Cibola National Forest at 505-346-3900.
