Evacuations Lifted.

Mescalero Apache Tribal President Authur “Butch” Blazer, working with Mescalero Conservation Law Enforcement, Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Southwest Area Incident Management Team, has lifted all evacuations in place due to the Soldier Canyon wildfire. Residents will be able to return to their homes after 3 p.m. today, June 9. When returning to your home, please do not enter the fire area. The Soldier Canyon Fire area extends from the Mescalero Ceremonial Grounds (Milepost 245 Highway 70) to US 70 Milepost 248, BIA Route 6 to BIA Route 11. The Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation is still in extreme fire danger and all off-road travel is prohibited.

Residents should be aware there will still be firefighters in the neighborhoods as they return home. These firefighters may be traveling to and from the fireline as well as assessing structure protection needs for the future. Please drive slowly on area roadways and keep on the lookout for firefighters.

There will be a Mescalero Tribal Community meeting at the Mescalero Community Center at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Tribal representatives and fire managers will be on hand to provide a presentation discussing the Soldier Canyon Fire and suppression efforts.
