The Sardinas Canyon Fire transitioned from the Type 3 Organization to a Type 4 Organization this morning at 6:00 a.m.  Due to steep and inaccessible terrain, the northeast portion of the fire perimeter will not be fully contained until substantial rainfall occurs over the fire area.  Crews will continue to hold and secure containment lines.

The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Suppression repair work continues, contingent on the weather.  The fire suppression repair and rehabilitation crews will continue to chip previously cut vegetation and repair dozer lines.

There will be a community meeting held on July 12, 2018 at 5:30 pm located at the Penasco Community Center at 14136 NM-75, Penasco, New Mexico.  Carson National Forest Staff and Fire Managers will be on hand to answer questions about the Sardinas Canyon fire and post suppression activities.

The area around the Sardinas Canyon Fire will remain closed due to ongoing fire activities and for the safety of the public. Access to Forest Service Road 76, off Hwy 518, will be closed, as well as sections of Forest Service Roads 442, 440 and 439. We discourage traveling on these roads, but if you do, please exercise extreme caution for firefighter safety. The La Junta Summerhomes, Duran and Upper La Junta campgrounds are located off of Forest Service Road 76 and are included in this area closure.
