Fire Restrictions will be lifted for Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands Effective 7/13/18

Albuquerque, NM, July12, 2018 – Monsoonal activity has increased bringing widespread precipitation across the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands.  The fire danger level has decreased substantially.  Fire restrictions will be lifted across all districts at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13. 

Please note that the Las Huertas Picnic Area and the Sandia Cave, both located on the Sandia Ranger district, will remain closed even after the fire restrictions are lifted.  The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is working on State Highway 165; these sites will reopen in approximately two to three weeks when the NMDOT’s work is complete.

Many factors were carefully considered before a decision was made to reopen the Cibola, including current fuel moisture levels, recent and predicted rainfall, lower temperatures and increased humidity.  Although the combination of these factors have reduced the fire danger, the public is encouraged to use extreme caution with campfires.  Drown campfires with plenty of water and make sure they are cold to the touch before you leave the area.

“We know that fire restrictions and closures can cause a significant amount of inconvenience for the public and we greatly appreciate the cooperation that we have received during this time,” said Steve Hattenbach, Forest Supervisor for the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands.

The monsoon season can increase the possibility of flash flooding, especially in areas that have been burned. Stay aware of current and predicted weather forecasts and be prepared for dangerous conditions.
