SFNF – Venado Fire Update

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Venado Fire UPDATE

Start Date: July 20

Cause: Lightning

Size: 450 acres

Location: Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest

Containment: 0%

Fuel: Ponderosa Pine

Weather: Light winds, clear skies

Resources on scene: Three hotshot crews, one helicopter with bucket, one dozer, two engines

Situation: The fire is in a remote location on Mesa Venado and in an adjacent drainage area, one mile and a half north of Deer Creek Landing, and three quarters of a mile east of Joaquin Mesa. The forest is inaccessible from the south end of FR 376, but is accessible from the north end of FR 376. Smoke is visible from I-25, Jemez, Santa Fe, and possibly Bernalillo. Due to fire behavior, Forest Road (FR) 376 is closed from Gilman Tunnels to Porter landing. Area day trip visitors are being notified by USDA Forest Service law enforcement to leave the area.  Hotshot crews established control lines overnight and will continue to prep areas as needed.

Smoke/Air Quality: Because of location and elevation, smoke from the Venado Fire is visible from all directions coming into the Jemez Mountains area. Smoke is expected to linger in neighboring communities including Gilman, Jemez Pueblo, and areas near NM State Route 4. Communities along US-550 including San Ysidro, Zia Pueblo, Bernalillo and Rio Rancho will also see smoke.

Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory or heart disease should be prepared to exercise precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health using the 5-3-1 visibility method can be found at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website https://nmtracking.org/fire or by calling 1-888-878-8992.
