GRANTS, NM; August 8, 2018 – For Immediate Release –The Pecos Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands is scheduled to be transitioned back to local fire management on Friday, August 10, 2018. The Team was brought on to manage the Mariposa fire and also assisted with several other lightning ignited fires on the district. Firefighting efforts, dropping temperatures and an increase in precipitation has resulted in decreased fire activity on the district. No further information will be sent out unless there is a significant change.
Sawyer Fire Overview
Start Date: August 6, 2018
Location: Zuni Mountains, south of Forest Road 50 near the community of Sawyer
Fuel: Ponderosa Pine
Cause: Lightning
Size: 9 acres
Situation: 100% contained on 8/8/18
Road 169 Overview
Start Date: August 6, 2018
Location: Zuni Mountains, south of Lookout Mountain along Forest Road 50
Fuel: Ponderosa Pine and Pinon
Cause: Lightning
Size: 35 acres
Situation: Full containment anticipated 8/10/18
Camp Two Overview
Start Date: August 6, 2018
Location: Zuni Mountains, private land on Oso Ridge west of Lookout Mountain near Camp 2, and three miles west of incident 169
Fuel: Ponderosa Pine
Cause: Lightning
Size: 30 acres
Situation: Full containment anticipated 8/10/18
Mariposa fire Overview
Start Date: July 29, 2018
Location: Mount Taylor, 30 Miles NE of Grants by the intersection of Forest Roads 550 and 194
Fuel: Ponderosa Pine and Pinon/Juniper.
Cause: Lightning
Size: 895 acres + final acreage from spot fires yet to be determined
Situation: 60% contained
Sunflower fire Overview
Start Date: August 7, 2018
Location: Located near the community of Ramah, by Timber Lake Subdivision’s Sunflower Drive and Hill Top Road.
Fuel: Open Pinon/ Juniper.
Cause: Lightning
Size: 2 acres
Situation: 100% contained
