10/22/18 Tres Piedras Prescribed Burn Underway

The 387 acre slash pile burn is located in the Tio Gordito unit. The piles are located on the west side of US Highway 285, 4 miles south of Tres Piedras. Fire managers plan to continue with hand ignitions through Friday to complete this burn, weather permitting.

This prescribed burn is conducted to consume slash piles that were created by thinning projects. These projects were initiated to reduce the amount of vegetation and dead and down material within the Wildland Urban Interface area that surrounds the community of Tres Piedras.

Smoke may be visible from the communities of Tres Piedras and Highway 285.

Smoke from the prescribed burn will be monitored to ensure New Mexico Environment Department Air Quality Bureau regulations are met. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.  Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website at https://nmtracking.org/fire.
