Prescribed Burn Planned in Chaves County

Beginning the week of March 17, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will begin seeking opportunities to conduct the 200-acre Nester Ball Prescribed Fire (Map) in Chaves County, approximately 50 miles north of Roswell.  Implementation will depend upon favorable weather conditions and is anticipated to take one day to complete.  Smoke from the burn may be visible from surrounding communities and nearby roadways.  Please exercise caution and avoid areas impacted by smoke and the prescribed burn operations.

The objective of this project is to reduce the amount of vegetation available to wildfire.  Other goals include improving the watershed and wildlife habitat, and increasing the health, vigor and competitive ability of native plants.

Prescribed fire requirements include having the appropriate weather conditions and the required personnel and equipment on hand.  Environmental trends, conditions at the time of the project implementation and forecasts will be taken into consideration to ensure that any negative impacts will be minimized.  Measures will be taken to reduce the amount of smoke created by the prescribed fires.

For more information on this prescribed burn, please call Nathan Curnutt at 575-627-0311.
