Chupadera Prescribed Fire in Socorro County to Begin

The Bureau of Land Management Socorro Field Office is planning to burn up to 2,711 acres in eastern Socorro County April 1 – May 15, weather permitting.  The Chupadera Prescribed Burn is located on Chupadera Mesa, 10 miles east of Bingham, N.M. and 5 miles north of US Highway 380.  The objective for this burn is to remove slash (limbs and branches) created as part of old thinning projects, reduce wildfire risk, improve ecosystem health, and enhance wildlife habitat.

Active ignition will take 1-5 days for the burn, with some smoke visible in the burn area for up to a week after ignition operations are completed.  Firefighters will monitor the burn until there is no visible smoke. The smoke from the Chupadera Prescribed Burn is not expected to impact Highway 380, but the public is advised to use caution when traveling through the area during the burn.  In addition, travelers should use caution on the Iron Mine Road on Chupadera Mesa.

Questions about these projects should be directed to the BLM Socorro Field Office at 575-835-0412.
