Fire officials on the Lincoln National Forest, Sacramento Ranger District will continue with the Lewis Prescribed Burn today and throughout the weekend. Smoke may be visible from Weed, Sacramento, Mayhill and Cloudcroft, NM.
Over the next 5 days, fire officials hope to claim approximately 650 acres in Seep Canyon and Little Lewis Canyon, conditions permitting.
Prescribed burns are specifically designed to meet land management objectives and are one of the best tools available to restore a fire-adapted ecosystem. The Lewis Prescribed Burn project aims to achieve the following purposes:
- Decrease encroachment of Rocky Mountain Juniper and Gambel Oak shrubs across the forested
landscape and most especially in meadows while creating a mosaic pattern of reproduction in all
tree species. - Create and/or maintain oak and Juniper/Pinion savannahs.
- Stimulate fresh browse for all wildlife species.
- Create a resilient forested landscape against damaging wildland fires.
