Cibola NF & National Grasslands – Baney Prescribed Burn Rescheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 on the Magdalena Ranger District

MAGDALENA, NM, May 26, 2019– Fire managers from Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands have rescheduled the Baney prescribed burn on the Magdalena Ranger District to begin on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, dependent on favorable weather conditions.

Fire managers postponed the prescribed burn last week due to wind conditions over the fire perimeter. Forecasted weather conditions are now favorable, giving fire managers the opportunity to implement the prescribed burn.  The  plan is to burn up to 4,089 acres. The Baney Prescribed Burn is located in the San Mateo Mountains, approximately 50 miles southwest of Magdalena, NM.

Prescribed fires are the most effective tool available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems.  The burn will help to reduce forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increase habitat diversity. Prescribed burns are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority. Smoke-sensitive individuals and those with respiratory or heart disease should take precautionary measures.  Air quality information and health protection measures are posted online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website:
