Pine Lodge Fire Update July 4, 2019

Detected: June 19, 2019, approximately 2:00 p.m.

Cause: Unknown, Under Investigation

Containment: 48%

Fuel Type: Grass and Pinon/Juniper, Mixed Conifer

Current Size: Approximately 14,783 Acres

Location: Off Highway 246 between Roswell and Capitan Between Boy Scout Mountain and Seven Cabins Road

Summary: Thunderstorms, accompanied by rain fell across the fire area and Tuesday evening through yesterday and significantly reduced fire behavior. Firefighters mopped-up hot spots within the fire’s perimeter and patrolled completed fire line. Unburned vegetation is burning within the fire perimeter, and smoke may be visible. All fire lines are holding. Fire activity is minimal in the Copeland and Peachtree Canyon drainages. Rehabilitation of all fire lines and dozed lines has been completed. The Pecos Type 3 Team will transition command of the fire back to the Smokey Bear Ranger District Friday morning. The local district will continue to monitor the fire area.

The Pine Lodge Fire is 52 percent contained. The containment percentage number is likely to remain the same over the next few days or possibly weeks, despite minimal fire activity. Containment percentages as based on the amount of containment lines established around the perimeter of the fire and are not the same as a fire being out. In the case of the Pine Lodge Fire, about half of the perimeter is in the remote, rough, rocky terrain of the Capitan Wilderness where it would be unsafe to send firefighters to construct containment lines. Fire officials continue to monitor the area by aircraft and the use of a remote viewing station. Fire behavior in the wilderness area is minimal because of the recent rains.

Weather: Moderate to heavy rainfall fell on the fire area over the last 36 hours, moderating fire activity. Rain chances are expected to decrease for the next couple of days with increasing chances into the weekend.

Firefighting Resources: With preparations to transition to the Smokey Bear Ranger District, resources are being released for other assignments.

Closures: A forest closure is in place for the Capitan Mountains east of Capitan Gap. Public entry into the area is prohibited. Official closure information and map is posted on the Pine Lodge Fire Inciweb page.

All other areas within the Smokey Bear Ranger District are open for recreation. Visitors are reminded to always be careful with fire while enjoying our forests
