Valles Caldera National Preserve’s fire closure in effect for 12/11/2020-12/22/2020

Beginning at 8:00 AM on Friday, December 11, 2020, a fire closure is in effect for the area of Cerro Seco while prescribed pile burning is managed by the National Park Service. This prescribed burn will benefit the forest restoration efforts within Valles Caldera National Preserve.

In order to protect the public, partners, and employees from the dangers of wildland fire, the area and access to or thru the burn area is closed.  (See highlighted area in map.)

In addition, in order to protect wildland firefighters and support operations, the burn area and access to or thru the area is closed.

Violation of these conditions can result in fines up to $5,000 and imprisonment of up to one year.

The temporary closure will be rescinded on December 22, 2020, or when wildland fire operations conclude and the area is deemed safe for entry by the Fire Management Office and the Superintendent of Valles Caldera National Preserve

Please direct questions to the preserve’s phone line (575)829-4100, option #3 or vall_info@nps.gov.
