The McBride Fire, located on private land in the Village of Ruidoso, is now estimated at 4,312 acres. The fire is 0% contained at this time and has moved into the Kokopelli subdivision. Approximately 150 structures burned or were damaged, including homes, and many more remain threatened. Evacuations remain in place for all areas north of Ruidoso High School. This includes Moon Mountain, Gavilan Canyon, Hull Road, Paradise Canyon, Eagle Creek, Homestead Acres, Rancho Ruidoso Valley Estates, Old Fort Stanton Road, and Airport Road. Power is out for much of the Village with no estimate yet on when it will be restored. A Type 1 Incident Management Team is expected to arrive tomorrow (04/13) and begin formulating a strategy to fight the McBride Fire. Numerous resources with the Forestry Division, Village of Ruidoso, Lincoln County, local volunteer fire departments, USFS, and Sacramento Hot Shots will continue to secure fire lines and work to stop the forward progress of the fire throughout the night. A downed power line started the fire at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Evacuations: According to the Village of Ruidoso, the Ruidoso Convention Center is open and the Red Cross is on-site to assist. Space is also available at Carrizozo Schools, 800 D Ave, in Carrizozo.
Livestock: The Roswell Animal Shelter and Otero Fairgrounds are open for livestock. The Lincoln County Fairgrounds is currently full and not taking any more animals.
The Village has declared a State of Emergency: Those wishing to make donations or volunteer can call 575-258-6900 or 575-937-7785.
Schools: The Village reports that firefighters did an incredible job of stopping the fire near the Ruidoso Middle School in order to evacuate more than 1,700 students from the middle school, high school, and elementary school. All students were taken to the Ruidoso Convention Center to be reunited with their families. Classes are canceled for Ruidoso Municipal Schools on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
Weather: According to the National Weather Service, a cold front with very strong winds gusting to 70 miles per hour is expected to shift to a west-southwest direction between 8:00-9:00 PM tonight over the fire area. View the NWS active fire map here.
