Location/Origin: Nogal Canyon, west of Capitan

Fuels: Ponderosa pine, pinon and juniper, dry grasses

Structures burned: 6 primary, 8 outbuildings   

Highlights: Favorable weather conditions this morning supported helicopter bucket drops that were coordinated with the crews on the ground to successfully target areas of concern. This morning Southwest Area Type 1 Team 2 assumed management of both the Nogal Canyon and McBride Fires.

Operations: Ground crews and engines continued to extinguish hotspots in areas around homes in order to ensure that residents can return to a safe and secure area when the closure is lifted. Additionally, crews worked to secure the perimeter of the fire. The fire is expected to be active until late tonight.  Dead and down fuels and grasses are drought stricken and extremely dry. A night shift will be on duty, patrolling and continuing to work on the fire.

Lincoln County Mercantile is offering to help owners of animals that are being housed at the Capitan Fairgrounds, due to evacuations.

Evacuations: All of Nogal Canyon remains in evacuation status. As soon as it is safe for the public to re-enter the fire area, an update will be posted.

Weather: Thursday night, April 14Clear, minimum temperatures in the mid-40s. Winds west 12-15 mph, gusts to 30. Later winds will be terrain driven.

Restrictions/Closures: Nogal Canyon is closed

Smoke: Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures.
