The Simona Fire, located near Jarales in Valencia County, remains estimated at 165 acres and 0% containment. Despite strong winds, crews are making good progress in creating a safe line around the fire, which is burning on both sides of the Rio Grande. Firefighters are also continuing efforts to ensure the protection of two large natural gas lines and a telecommunications line in the area. No structures are threatened and there are no evacuations in place. Helicopters will be making additional water drops throughout the day to assist firefighters on the ground when it is safe to do so.
Evacuation Center: Residents who choose to voluntarily evacuate due to health issues related to smoke may utilize the Belen Recreation Center at 305 Eagle Lane in Belen.
Smoke: Individuals sensitive to wildfire smoke should take precautions and use the New Mexico Department of Health 5-3-1 Visibility Method to determine if it’s safe to be outside. Learn more at
