The Mitchell Fire, located east of Mosquero in Harding County, is now estimated at 25,000 acres and 10% contained. The fire continues to burn actively through very dry fuels that include pinion, juniper, and grass. The fire has crossed two boundaries, one to the west and a second (a highway) to the south of Bueyeros. Bulldozers are working alongside firefighters to extend the fire line. No structures are threatened at this time and there are no evacuations. The fire started Friday, April 22 off of NM Highway 39 near David Hill. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
