The Skiles 429 Fire is located northeast of Clayton and approximately 3 miles west of the Oklahoma border in Union County. The fire is estimated at 1,000+ acres and 0% contained. The fire is being fueled by extremely dry conditions and strong wind gusts. Fuels include grass and pinon-juniper. The Red Cross has set up evacuation shelters in Boise City and Wheeless, Oklahoma for approximately 25 residents. There are no reports of evacuations on the New Mexico side. The Skiles 429 Fire was first reported just after 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon (04/29). Numerous resources are on the scene from the Forestry Division and Union County. The cause is under investigation.
