TURKEY FIRE UPDATE

NEW START: Turkey Fire
Location of Origin: In close proximity to Bursum Road,18 miles southeast of Reserve, NM and 10 miles north of Snow Lake, on the Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District
Start date: May 1, 2022 – 2:50 p.m. MST
Current Size: 450 acres and growing
Percent Contained: 0%
Cause: Under Investigation
Resources Assigned: Aerial resources including Air Attack, Lead Planes and 4 Air Tankers, SEATS. Resources that are on scene or mobilizing include: 5 Engines and a Task Force, 10-person Initial Attack hand crew and 1 Type 2 crew.
The Turkey Fire was reported around 3:00 pm today and within 3 hours increased in size from 25 acres to 300 acres. As resources started arriving, the initial size-up indicated the fire has a HIGH growth potential. A Type 3 organization assumed command of the fire at 5:48 pm, at which time the fire was estimated to be 300 acres and growing. Full suppression strategy is underway. The fire is burning through grass and timber across gentle topography. Fire behavior is described as running with 4’ flame lengths. Spread potential is high. This area is heavily used by the public and several homes and other structures are in the area.
By 7:00 pm, the fire was estimated at 450 acres…and growing.
